We had an excellent time on this excursion, unbeatable for $33 USD a person! (We did not need to pay for transportation since it is only a 20 min walk from Imerovigli but add 6 euro for the cable car and 5 euro for the Volcano entrance fee)
The tour begins at the Old Port in Fira. Keep in mind you will need to take the cable car down for 6 euros a person (or a 30 min walk down 600 steps - but it is covered in donkey feces and the stones are slippery). We checked in at Santo Star and proceeded to wait for boarding. The boarding process was disorganized since different groups (10:15, 10:30) were all clustered together with no clear signage indication of when to board. The first boat filled immediately (they tried to put people of the same language on the boat together) but the second boat came only a few minutes later and we got on with our mobile tickets no problem.
Once at the Volcano, it was a very steep climb to the top on loose rocks and dirt, so it is important to have good shoes, cold water and sun protection. You can also buy water on board for 1 euro. Moderately athletic people will be fine. The guide explained some of the volcano's history and several points and we mostly traveled as a group.
The hot springs were neat, but keep in minds it's a quick stop. I definitely recommend water shoes for the rocky bottom and a waterproof phone case if you want to take pictures. We swam with noodles. The water was cool and then lukewarm at the "hot springs".
We then headed to Thirasia for 2 hours. You can climb up the steep stairs to Manolas (similar to the one in Fira) for a panoramic view and restaurant but due to the heat and physical exertion we opted to stay down at the port. We ate at Qhera down at the far right of the port. It was a little pricey, but we enjoyed the trendy vibe and tranquility as opposed to the hustle and bustle at Captain John's where most people went.
You can leave things on the boat at each stop so bring whatever you need. Staff was friendly. Ceasar was great and omg that man booked it up the mountain. THIS IS AN ADVENTURER'S EXCURSION AND WE LOVED IT! Much better than a $140 catamaran tour where you don't get to hike or swim :)
